Women by Hugh Bridport (English-born American artist, 1794-1869)
Hugh Bridport was born in England, where he trained at the Royal Academy with miniature painter Charles Wilkins. Bridport immigrated to Philadelphia with his artist brother George in 1816, where they established an architectural drawing academy which operated until 1822. In 1824, Bridport served as a founding member of the Franklin Institute, teaching architectural drawing classes there until 1833. Later Bridport engaged in the trade of lithography with Kennedy & Lucas, the first commercial establishment of its type in Philadelphia.
