Apart from the beauty of the horse itself, there must have been something majestic about courting scenes on horseback. The horses, clothes, staff and estates in the background suggest these men/couples were very wealthy and important people. The love was not being expressed in a private space. Aelbert Cuyp's painting "Lady & Gentleman on Horseback" has other riders, hunting dogs and staff, but it is beautiful.
