Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908) was educated in an academy at Newburyport, Massachusetts.  He gave up a career as a Boston businessman to paint landscapes by the water.  Bricher was one of the last painters of the Hudson River School. As landscapes & luminism fell out of style, he purchased a home in the 1890s close to the sea on Staten Island, where he had views of the Atlantic Ocean & Raritan Bay, which he painted until his death.
