Berthe Morisot (French artist, 1841-1895) Self-Portrait 1885
Berthe Morisot was born in Bourges to a privileged family devoted to art. Both Berthe & sister Edma studied with several well-known painters, but Berthe was to be most influenced by her teacher Corot. She joined the circle of Impressionists; and Manet, who would become her brother-in-law, was influenced by Morisot as seen in his later works. In 1874, Morisot married Manet's brother, Eugene, & they had one daughter, Julie, who became the subject for many of her mother's paintings. Morisot herself painted a broad range of subjectd but focused on domestic life and portraits in which she could use family & personal friends as models. She commented, "I don't think there has ever been a man who treated a woman as an equal; and that's all I would have asked, for I know I'm worth as much as they."
