Therese Schwartze (1852-1918) was a Dutch portrait painter. Therese was the daughter of artist Johan Georg Schwartze (1814 - 1874), from whom she received her early training before studying for a year under Gabriel Max & Franz von Lenbach in Munich. In 1879, she went to Paris to study under Jean-Jacques Henner, and then she continued for 8 years in the women's special classes at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Arts. She was known for her ability to portray both everyday folks and the Amsterdam elite. She was one of the few women painters with portraits in the hall of painters at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Some other talented family artists included her sister Georgine & her 2 nieces, including Lizzy Ansingh (pictured in The Inmates of my House). Some of her pictures are signed with her married name van Duyl-Schwartze.
