Wilhelm Maria Hubertus Leibl, German realist painter of portraits & genre scenes, entered the Munich Academy in 1864. He worked from 1866 to 1868 under Avon Ramberg; & in 1869, under Karl von Piloty. In 1870, he went to Paris to study with Gustave Courbet, but returned to Munich after only 9 months because of the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. He lived in Munich for 3 years, & then moved from village to village in Bavaria drawing on the local peasant life for subject matter.

Leibl's painting was a reaction to the Romantic naturalism then prevalent in Germany. Like that of Courbet in France, Leibl's objective style was based on a direct, careful recording of nature, objects, figures, & situations. Later he abandoned the hard brilliance of his early works & drew softer, more obscure outlines of his subjects.
