Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) before the rectangles...

Piet Mondrian (Dutch painter, 1872 - 1944) Farm near Duivendrecht, c 1916.

Recent images of spring floods on television reminded me of the above painting from the Chicago Institute of Art.  It is an early work of Piet Mondrian.

Piet Mondrian (Dutch painter, 1872 - 1944) Portrait of a Girl with Flowers.

And these portraits are also a surprise from a painter not generally known for representation or sentimentality.  Mondrian was the famous Dutch abstract painter, whose most recognized works are abstract paintings of colored squares, rectangles, and thick black lines. His works before 1920 are little known but quite appealing.
