While I was looking at the change over time in the depiction of women with veils, it struck me that it was not just the clothing or the artist's styles that had changed. It was the attitude of the women. They were more independent and more self assured. It was 1920, after all, and American women were just getting to vote in national elections for the 1st time since 1776. But the change I saw was fairly universal across Europe and the other Western countries. Here are a few of those confident new women, young and old.
