Helen Forbes (American artist, 1891-1945) Vieda
Helen Forbes was best known for her paintings of the American west, but here we will look at her portraits reflecting the diversity of her native California. She studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco with Frank Van Sloan & Armin Hansen; at the Akademic der Bildenden Künste in Munich; with André Lhote in Paris; & with Ernst Leyden in Amsterdam. Her murals, many of which were done under the 1930s Works Progress Administration, depicted wildlife & scenery of the American west. Forbes was commissioned to paint murals for the post offices in Susanville, Monrovia, & Merced, California. She was a member of the San Francisco Art Association and was president of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists from 1928-1930.
