The Rather Amazing Portraits of his Wife & Others by England's George Spencer Watson 1869-1934



George Spencer Watson (English artist, 1869-1934) Artistis's Wife Hilda and Maggie 1911


Englishman George Spencer Watson studied at the RA Schools from 1889, & exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1891. He was quickly accepted & lauded in the artistic community of England. He won Royal Academy Schools Silver Medals in 1889 & 1891, plus the Landseer Scholarship in 1892. He was elected R.O.I. in 1900; R.P. in 1904; A.R.A. in 1923; & a Member of the Royal Academy (R.A.) in 1932. He married Hilda, a dancer & mime artist. Their daughter Mary Spencer Watson (1913–2006) became a sculptor.

  1. I have just bought from Dorset Museum a copy of 'Purbeck Arcadia - Dunshay Manor and the Spencer Watsons'. I am ashamed to say that I did not know about this wonderful artist before. He certainly paints in a style that appeals to me. Some of his portraits remind me of John Singer Sargent; they are of the same quality. I particularly like the family scene with the horse and hound showing the Purbeck landscape in the background.
