Memories of My Grandmother
Edmund Tarbell (American painter, 1862-1938) Preparing for the Matinee 1907 Detail
This is a painting by Edmund Tarbell which is at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It reminds me of my grandmother, a solitary, determined woman, with her hair piled high upon her head, who lived most of her life in Indianapolis. She had her hands full raising 6 children, 5 of whom were boys; but she was able to maintain a refined, genteel, but loving approach to the ups & downs of everyday life.
