American Folk Art - John Denny Conner 1820-1884

John Denny Conner (1820-1884) Josephine Conner 3 months Fulton County IL 1846

One of my favorite 19th-century babies!  The portrait's hand-written label reads,  "Portrait of Josephine Conner, Life size, at age of three months. Painted by her father, John Denny Conner, at Bloomington, Ill, in the summer of 1846. Josephine Conner, only child of John D. and Minerva Conner, was born June 25, 1846. Died September 9, 1886. Age 40 yrs, . 2 mos. 15 days."

John Denny Carter was born in 1820 in Delaware to John Allee Conner (1789-1863) and his wife Mary Snow Denny (1798-1867). The family left Smyrna, Delaware, for Ohio, and finally settled in Fulton, Illinois.  John married Mary Alice Fell; and after her death, he married Minerva A. Smith (1823-1856) in February of 1846.  Josephine was their only child.
