Bernhard Gutmann (German-American artist, 1869-1936) was born & educated in Germany, & arrived in the United States at the age of 23. He moved to Virginia to seek work as an electrician & quickly rose to become the first superintendent of drawing in the Lynchburg public schools. In 1899, he moved to New York City. After his 1907 marriage to Bertha Goldman, granddaughter of the founder of the investment banking firm Goldman Sachs, he was financially independent & free to concentrate on his art alone. He organized the Lynchburg Art Club in Virginia, & assisted in the foundation of the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut. Because his family did not need the income from his art, his works remained in a few private collections. Few pieces made it to the art market or to museums until relatively recently.
