Ukranian-born Ilya Yefimovich Repin (Russian: Илья́ Ефи́мович Ре́пин, Ukrainian: Ілля Юхимович Рєпін) was a leading Russian painter & sculptor of the Peredvizhniki artistic school, who dedicated much of his work to his native area, the Ukraine. His realistic works often expressed psychological depth while exposing the tensions within the existing social order. Around the time of his death in 1930, a Repin cult developed, where he was held up as a model "progressive" & "realist" often imitated by "Socialist Realist" artists in the USSR.
