Off to Russia - Wassily Kandinsky 1866-1944

"Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential." Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky (Russian-born artist, 1866-1944). Color Studies

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (1866-1944), a Russian artist working in Germany & France, is often credited with painting the first modern abstract works. Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa. He enrolled at the University of Moscow to study law & economics, and assumed the chair of Roman Law at the University of Dorpat.

He did not start painting, until he was 30 in 1896, when he saw some Monet paintings including Haystacks. He wrote, "That it was a haystack the catalogue informed me. I could not recognize it. This non-recognition was painful to me. I considered that the painter had no right to paint indistinctly. I dully felt that the object of the painting was missing. And I noticed with surprise and confusion that the picture not only gripped me, but impressed itself ineradicably on my memory. Painting took on a fairy-tale power and splendour."

Following his new passion, in 1896, he settled in Germany to study with Anton A┼żbe & at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He returned to Moscow in 1914, at the inception of World War. He was unsympathetic to the official theories on art in Moscow & returned to Germany in 1921, where he taught at the Bauhaus school of art & architecture from 1922, until the Nazis closed it in 1933. Once again he moved, this time to France, where he lived the rest of his life, becoming a French citizen in 1939.
