Beyond the proper tea & lounging nudes of New Yorker Abraham Leon Kroll 1884–1974

Abraham Leon Kroll (American artist, 1884–1974) In  the Country

These paintings of ladies at leisure accompanied by African American women doing the work are surprising, because they were painted by a native-born New Yorker, who also lived in New England later in his life.  This is not the old South.  Leon Kroll was a painter & lithographer. Born into a musical family in New York City, Kroll's father was a violinist.   In the early 1900s he began taking classes at the National Academy of Design, where he won student prizes & had his 1st major exhibition in 1906. In 1908 he won a scholarship to study art in Paris and attended the Académie Julian, studying at the atelier of Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1913, Kroll showed work at the Armory Show.  Known primarily as a classic figurative artist who painted many nudes, Kroll taught at the Art Students League of New York & the school of the National Academy of Design, where was named as Associate in 1920, & full Academician in 1927.  During his career, he also taught at the Maryland Institute of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, & the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1930, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Letters, & he served as the president of the Painters, Sculptors & Engravers Society. Another surprising aspect of this posting on Kroll is that I am posting none of his nudes.
