Reading Outdoors - My Favorite American Reading Portrait by William Clarke fl. 1785-1806

1798 1793 William Clarke, (American artist, fl 1785-1806)  Mrs William Frazer  (Mary Reah) (1783-1816) of Delaware

Portrait & miniature painter, William Clarke was active in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania circa 1785. In the 1790's he was active in Delaware & Baltimore, Maryland. He then worked in Philadelphia at the 2 firms: Pratt, Rutter & Co.; and Paul, Rutter & Clarke from 1796 to 1806. Working there, Clarke was associated with a sign-painting business in partnership with Jeremiah Paul, Matthew Pratt, & George Rutter. Unfortunately few of his portraits survive. One that does is a portrait of Maryland Governor Levin Winder, who is also painted outside by his Eastern Shore gardens reading a book. Clarke also painted the Governor's wife with their gardens in the background, but, alas, no book in hand.
