Women Working Outdoors - Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848–1884)

Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848–1884), was born in the village of Damvillers, where his father grew grapes in a vineyard to support the family. His grandfather also lived in the village; his garden had fruit trees of apple, pear, & peach espaliered up high walls. Bastien fought in the Franco-Prussian war & returned home to paint the villagers. In 1873, he painted his grandfather in the garden, a painting which became a favorite for its naturalistic qualities. These paintings of village women are also sensitive & realistic.
