Dressing for winter - The privileged of Scotland by Francis Cadell 1883-1937

Francis Cadell was born in Edinburgh & educated there at the Edinburgh Academy. At the age of 16, Cadell sailed to Paris to study at the Academie Julian.

Cadell’s 1st one man show was held in Edinburgh in 1908. In Scotland, Cadell had little direct contact with the progressive ideas emanating from abroad. Here he painted glamorous women in a loose, French impressionistic manner.

In 1911, he made arrangements for an annual exhibition of like-minded artists, The Society of Eight. Although based in the Scottish capital, the group ignored the traditional Glasgow/Edinburgh divide as it comprised artists from both cities. Among the group were Patrick Adam, David Alison, John Lavery, & SJ Peploe.

At his first post WWI London exhibition in 1923, which he shared with the Peploe & Hunter, critics commented on the "new solidity" of his painting.
