Photos-1840s-1850s-Nearly Arcane Trades

One of the most enlightening inventions of the 19th century was photography. This inexpensive method of making portraits allowed us to see all levels of people in society, rather than just the wealthy who could afford to have paintings of their families.

Children by Chinese artist Liu Derun b 1950

Liu Derun (Chinese artist, 1950) Golden

A native of Shandong, Liu Derun, whose paintings of children glorify the strength of the human spirit, was born in 1950. Traditionally when a child was expected in the family, the mother or a close relative would personally design & sew symbolic Tiger Head Hat. They hoped that by wearing the hat, the child would be protected from evil & disease. The hat also symbolizes family continuity & prosperity. It was not until the forming of New China in 1949, that art academies & institutions began offering systematic training for the Western Arts. An important milestone marking the new era was the first Chinese oil painting auction held by Christie's of Hong Kong in 1992, to great critical & financial success.
