In 1904, Bereny was a student of Tivadar Zemplényi, before he went to study in Paris, where he was particularly influenced by Cézanne's art. Politcally he took part in the art life of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, and he was the leader of the department for painting in the Art Directorate. After 1919, he emmigrated to Berlin, which he left to return home in 1926. He worked in Zebegény from 1934. He was awarded the Szinnyei prize in 1936.  Obviously, I am particularly fond of his self-portraits & his bold use of color.

18C Reading Indoors or How to flirt with a book

At first, of course, there is the innocent, virtuous young girl...

Pietro Antonio Rotari (Italian artist, 1707-1762) The Virtuous Girl

Italian painter Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707-1762), was a highly successful, itinerant artist who traveled painting portraits of wealthy patrons across Europe. As a young man he studied under Antonio Balestra in Rome & Francesco Trevisani in Naples. Thereafter he returned to Verona where he set up a studio for a while, before he began to travel.  His work attracted royal & aristocratic patrons in Dresden, Vienna, Munich, & Saint Petersburg.  In order to earn a living between commissioned portraits, he created many genre portraits, often images of pretty young girls casting coquettish glances. He died in St Petersburg, where he had traveled to paint for the Russian court.

Anders Leonard Zorn (Swedish painter, 1860–1920) was one of Sweden’s foremost artists who obtained international success as a painter, sculptor & printmaker in etching. In 1887, Zorn had received a request from the management of the Uffizi in Florence, to paint a self-portrait for their collection. It was not until 1888, that he completed this, and left the following reflections:

"I had by then never painted a portrait in the studio, because of the strange lighting and due to all the people disturbing me, but for my portrait, this could fit... It should be done in oils, and so I began trying. Of course, my vanity would portray me as a man capable of much more than painting, and suiting enough I was working on a bust of Emma in clay, so I let that lump of mud get in there as well."
