Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus' most important female disciples, was a popular subject during the early Renaissance.  The Bible relates that she became Jesus' close friend, particularly during his last days, being present at the cross after the male disciples, except John, had fled, & at his burial. She was the 1st person to see Jesus after his Resurrection, according to both John 20 & Mark 16:9.
